Ingredients
- Puff Pastry Sheets - a secret weapon in the kitchen! We always keep 2-3 packs of puff pastry in our freezer. It's the perfect ingredient to make a quick dessert or appetizer (Cranberry Brie Bites, Ham and Cheese Pinwheels, or Sausage Rolls to name a few!). Look for pre-rolled puff pastry sheets for the quickest recipes, or you can buy a brick of puff pastry and roll it out.
- Nutella - you can use regular Nutella, chocolate spread, or any brand of hazelnut spread you like. For some variation and extra crunch you can even use a crunchy hazelnut spread!
- Egg - whisked egg is brushed over the tops of the pastries. It gives them a shiny golden brown finish once they are baked. If you don't have an egg on hand you can omit this and the recipe still turns out great!
- Chewy Candies - are used for the tree toppers. You can use jube jubes, holiday candy bells, candy starts, jelly beans, or any colored chewy candy!
- Icing Sugar - this is optional, it is sprinkled over the tops of the pastries to give them a beautiful finish and also add an extra hint of sweetness.

- Preheat the oven to 375˚F with racks in the upper and lower thirds. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Or preheat Air Fryer to 375˚F.
- Unroll 1 thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Evenly spread the Nutella over the pastry. Place the second piece of thawed pastry on top and gently press to stick them together and remove any air bubbles.
- Evenly make marks of where you will cut the dough into strips (you will be able to make about 12 cuts to make 12 trees). Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, carefully slice the dough into strips.
- Note: if you prefer to make stars out of the pastry for tree toppers you can save one strip of dough and use a small star cookie cutter to cut stars. This will leave you with 11 tree pastries. We prefer to use a candy as the tree topper, so we get 12 tree pastries.
- To shape the trees, carefully fold each dough strip on itself in a zig-zag motion starting with a large section to create the tree base. After each fold make them shorter and shorter to create a tree shape.
- Carefully insert a skewer in the center of the tree and place in on the prepared baking sheet. Leave a small amount of skewer sticking out of the top of the tree so you can attach the tree topper after baking.
- If you cut stars out for the tree toppers attach them to the top of the tree on the skewer.
- In a small bowl whisk the egg. Brush over the tops and sides of each tree.
- OVEN BAKING COOKING METHOD
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown (rotating and switching the pans halfway through cooking).
AIR FRYER COOKING METHOD
Working in batches depending on the size of your air fryer, cook the trees in a single layer (about 2-3 trees at a time) for 10-12 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and cooked through. - Once the pastries are cooked and cooled you can attach a candy tree topper on the top of the skewer (ex. Jube Jube, jelly bean, or any round soft candy of choice).
- Garnish the trees with icing sugar. Enjoy!
Tips for the Best Pastries
- Pastry - for best results ensure the puff pastry is fully thawed. You can leave it in the fridge overnight, or on the kitchen counter at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes and it will be fully thawed. For the quickest recipe use pre-rolled sheets of puff pastry. If you can't find the pre-rolled sheets you can use a brick of puff pastry. Allow it to fully thaw and then roll it out to create two equal size square pieces.
- Assembly - when spreading the Nutella on the first sheet of puff pastry and then placing the second sheet on top, be sure to press down to seal them together and remove any large air pockets. This will ensure the pastries do not puff up too much while baking. We highly recommend using skewers to hold the trees shapes. If you do not use a skewer the trees may over puff and lose their shape a bit.
- Flavor Variations - for a nut free recipe you can use a nut free spread such as sun butter, wow butter, or a chocolate spread. You can also swap the Nutella for Biscoff spread, cookie butter, or regular peanut butter (not natural peanut butter)
