What is Crab Rangoon Dip
Crab rangoon dip turns the famous crab rangoon appetizer into a dip! All of the amazing flavor of crab rangoons - crab, cream cheese, green onions, garlic, soy sauce, and sugar, are transformed into the most rich and creamy dip.
The crab rangoon dip is baked and then topped with Thai sweet chili sauce. This sauce is commonly served as the dip for crab rangoons. It is rich, sweet and sticky, with a bit of spice. The most light and airy wonton chips are fried and served for dipping.
The Perfect Appetizer For:
- Hunan Chicken
- Honey Garlic Chicken & Green Beans
- Cashew Chicken
- Sweet and Sour Pork
- Spicy Crispy Chicken
- Sesame Chicken
- Honey Garlic Beef
Ingredients
- Crab Meat - imitation crab meat or canned lump crab meat that has been drained very well can be used. Most restaurants use imitation crab meat (kani). It is a classic ingredient in sushi rolls, kani salad, and crab rangoons. So you do not need to worry about using imitation crab instead of real crab, imitation is the most commonly used type for crab rangoons.
- Wonton Wrappers - these versatile wrappers are used to make wontons. They are so versatile and can be transformed into so many different things, such as chips. They are simply sliced in half to create two triangle chips and then pan fried. The result is the most light and airy chip!
- Cream Cheese & Mozzarella Cheese - cream cheese is what gives crab rangoons is signature creamy and cheesy filling. It is the base of the filling and for these wonton cups we also like to add in mozzarella (which is not commonly used to make crab rangoons). The mozzarella gives the filling an extra cheesy flavor.
- Sour Cream & Mayonnaise - these ingredients are not used to make regular crab rangoons. For the most rich and creamy dip flavor sour cream and mayonnaise needs to be added in to thin out the cream cheese to create the dip base.
- Green Onions - we love the pop of color and fresh onion flavor that these add.
- Garlic - everything is better with garlic! The fresh garlic adds a nice flavor to the crab filling.
- Sugar - crab meat (both lump crab and imitation crab meat) has a naturally sweet flavor. The sugar helps bring out the sweetness.
- Soy Sauce - just a splash of soy sauce goes a long way and adds a rich umami flavor to the filling.
- Thai Sweet Chili Sauce - is the sauce that is most commonly served with crab rangoons for dipping. It is served over the dip.

Prepare the Dip
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- If the cream cheese is not at room temperature, place on a microwave safe plate and heat for 10 seconds, or until slightly warmed and soft to the touch.
- In a medium sized bowl combine all the dip ingredients. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
- Transfer the dip into an oven safe baking dish (a 1 quart dish, or an 8”x8” or 9”x9” square dish, or an 8”-9” round dish can be used).
- Evenly distribute the reserved ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the dip.
- Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the dip is bubbling and the mozzarella cheese has slightly browned. (Note: while the dip is baking prepare the wonton chips).
Prepare the Wonton Chips
- While the dip cooks, prepare the wonton chips. Slice the wonton wraps in half along the diagonal to create two triangle chips. Note: the wonton chips are optional, you can serve this dip with tortilla chips, crackers, veggie sticks, pita bread, or any chip you prefer.
- PAN FRIED COOKING METHOD
In a frying pan or skillet, add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Heat on medium high heat. Working in batches, carefully place each wonton chip into the oil and fry for about 20-25 seconds, or until golden brown, bubbly, and crispy. Remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel on a plate.
AIR FRYER COOKING METHOD
Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Working in batches depending on the size of your air fryer, coat the wonton chips on both sides with cooking spray or brush with oil. Place in a single layer (DO NOT STACK THEM) in the air fryer and cook for about 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown, bubble and crispy. Remove from the air fryer and place on a serving platter. - Optional: pour the Thai sweet chili sauce over top of the dip and spread it out with a spoon. This is not a very spicy sauce, it is more sweet than spicy but if you prefer to omit this you can skip this step.
- Garnish the baked dip with sliced green onions. Serve with the wonton chips, crackers, pita bread, or veggie to dip and enjoy!
Tips for the Best Dip
- Wonton Wrappers - can be found in the refrigerator section of grocery stores next to the tofu and refrigerated salad dressing. They are small square wrappers. Be very careful when frying the wonton chips. They only take seconds to cook!
- Filling - be sure that your cream cheese is at room temperature or else the filling will be very hard to mix together. While you prep all the ingredients for the recipe leave the cream cheese on the kitchen counter. Or you can place it on a microwave safe plate and heat for 10 seconds, or until slightly warm and soft to the touch.
- Topping - if you are making this dip for a crowd when entertaining and you are worried about the spice level, you can omit the Thai sweet chili sauce. It is not an overly spicy sauce. It is actually more sweet than spicy. You can omit the topping or, you can split the dip into two baking dishes and add the sweet chili sauce to one of them so you can give your guests an option!

Yes! This dip is perfect for make ahead. Follow the recipe as per usual but do not bake the dip. Cover with foil or plastic wrap and store in the fridge. Just before serving preheat oven to 350°F. Bake the dip for 20-25 minutes or until warmed through and the cheesy is bubbly. Then top with the Thai sweet chili sauce and serve. We also recommend making the wonton chips the same day to ensure they stay crispy.
We do not recommend freezing this dip as the base is dairy which tends to split when frozen and thawed.
For a healthier dip swap the sour cream for Greek yogurt or Icelandic Skyr, swap the cream cheese for low fat cream cheese, and use a low fat mozzarella cheese.
For a vegetarian dip recipe swap the crab for a plant based crab or shrimp alternative.
The dip is naturally gluten free (note: some soy sauce brands may contain gluten, be sure to check the bottle and use a gluten free soy sauce).. Serve the dip with gluten free chips, crackers or pita bread.
