Banana bread was one of my favorite treats growing up.... and still is! My uncle Paul loves banana bread so we've had years and years of practice to create the BEST banana bread recipe. We've lost count how many times we've made banana bread but it's definitely in the thousands! This is hands down the best chocolate chip banana bread recipe you will make!
What is Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Banana bread is a rich, moist, and decadent bread packed with over ripe bananas. The bananas give the bread a natural sweetness and rich brown color. The addition of chocolate chips into banana bread takes it to a whole new level.
Mini semi-sweet chocolate chips are perfectly distributed throughout the banana bread thanks to a secret tip! The chocolate is not overly sweet and it pairs perfectly with the rich banana flavor.
Perfect Brunch Pairings
Ingredients
- Bananas - overly ripe bananas are the base of a great banana bread! You want bananas that have lots of dark brown and black spots, or that are entirely brown.
- Brown Sugar - this adds a rich sweet flavor to the bread. Only ½ cup is used because the bananas add a sweetness on their own so you don't need to add a large amount of sugar. The rich molasses flavor of the brown sugar pairs so well with the bananas.
- Flour - all purpose flour is used for the bread.
- Butter - makes the bread light and fluffy.
- Greek Yogurt - this is our secret ingredient! This protein packed yogurt makes the bread so light and fluffy... there's actually a science to it! The acidity of the yogurt actually breaks down the gluten in the flour which makes the bread light, fluffy and more tender.
- Chocolate Chips & Flour - mini chocolate chips are the best for banana bread because you get chocolate chips in every single bite. They are perfectly dispersed in the bread. Our pro tip to keep the chocolate chips from sinking to the bottom of the loaf is to toss them in a bit of flour. This keeps them suspended in the batter while baking.
- Egg - this recipe is great because it only needs 1 egg!
- Vanilla - vanilla extract brings out the natural sweetness of the bananas.
- Baking Soda
- Salt

- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Slice a 1" cube of unsalted butter and use your hands to rub the butter along the whole interior of a loaf pan being sure to coat thoroughly.
- In a medium sized bowl mix the dry ingredients together.
- Using a stand mixer or a hand mixer in a large bowl, beat the butter until light and creamy. Add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg. Mix for about 30 seconds, or until evenly combined.
- Add in the mashed bananas and vanilla. Mix on low speed until just combined.
- Mix in half the dry ingredients mixture. Then mix in the yogurt. Then add in the remaining dry ingredients mixture.
- In a small bowl stir together the chocolate chips and flour. This prevents the chips from falling to the bottom of the loaf when baking. Add to the mixing bowl and stir until evenly combined into the batter.
- Pour the batter into the buttered pan and use a spoon or spatula to smooth the top.
- Bake for approximately 60 minutes. Checking every 5 minutes after 60 minutes of cooking, pierce a toothpick into the center of the bread. When there are little to no crumbs or batter on the toothpick and the bread does not jiggle in the center, it is done.
- Remove the pan from the oven and place on a cooling rack for 10 minutes to cool. Once cooled shake the pan a few times to loosen the bread. Place a plate or cooling rack on top of the pan to cover the bread. Carefully flip and remove the bread from the pan. Cool another 10 minutes before slicing.
- Slice and serve. Enjoy!
Tips for the Best Banana Bread
- Butter - we recommend unsalted butter but if you only have salted on hand you can use that instead. The butter must be at room temperature or else the batter will not mix together properly. If your butter is straight out of the fridge, place it on a microwave safe plate and microwave for 10 seconds.
- Bananas - the riper the bananas the better! You want them to have lots of dark brown/black spots on them. If they are completely brown that means they are the sweetest. If using frozen bananas, allow them to fully thaw and then thoroughly mash them.
- Yogurt - for best results we recommend Greek yogurt. This gives the banana bread the best texture. You can swap for regular plain yogurt or sour cream for similar results.
- Chocolate Chips - to get the best distribution of chocolate chips in every bite we recommend mini chocolate chips. You can use regular chocolate chips. Semi-sweet chocolate chips adds the best flavor and melty chocolate texture. If you prefer you can use milk chocolate chips.
