What are Heart Jelly Donuts
These heart jelly donuts are a shortcut air fried donut recipe. Made using store-bought biscuit dough they come together so quick and easy. Filled with your favorite jam and then coated in icing sugar or a simple homemade glaze. They are cute, delicious, and a thoughtful treat!
Ingredients
- Strawberry Jam - we love a classic strawberry jelly donut and the red jam is perfect for Valentine's Day. You can use any jam you like - for example blueberry, triple berry, or raspberry to name a few!
- Biscuit Dough - store-bought biscuit dough is the secret to these shortcut donuts. Instead of making homemade dough you can simply use a cookie cutter to cut the biscuits and air fry them. They are so light and fluffy and taste just like a donut.
- Donut Glaze
- Icing Sugar, Milk, Vanilla - for decorating a simple glaze is made. You can add some red food coloring to tint the icing pink or red. You can also make a variety of different shades of pink and red!
- Sprinkles - for decorating
- Powdered Jelly Donuts - instead of glazing the donuts you can also make powdered sugar jelly donuts by coating the donuts in icing sugar.

- Prepare the Donuts
- Preheat Air Fryer to 350°F. If you do not have an air fryer see notes below.
- Carefully open the can of biscuits. Separate each biscuit and place on a cutting board or clean kitchen counter. Roll out the biscuits using a rolling pin or cup until slightly bigger than your cookie cutter.
- Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut each biscuit.
Tip: collect all of the leftover cut pieces and roll them together to cut 1 or 2 more hearts out of the leftover pieces. Or roll into small balls to create donut holes.
- Place the donuts in the preheated Air Fryer, space them apart by about 1" as they will expand when cooking. Spray the donuts with cooking spray. Air Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up (watch them closely as they cook quickly).
- Place the cooked donuts on a cooling rack and allow to fully cool before decorating. Please do not glaze the donuts while they are still warm as the icing will melt right off the donuts
- As the donuts cook, microwave the jam in a small bowl and stir. Remove or mash any large pieces of fruit into very small pieces. Transfer the jam to a piping bag or Ziploc bag and cut a small hole in one corner.
- When the donuts are cooled, use a chopstick or the handle of a spoon or fork to pierce the center or the donuts to make space for the jelly filling. Be careful not to pierce right through the donut.
- Use the Ziploc bag or piping bag to fill the donuts, apply a small amount of pressure to squeeze the jelly into the donuts and then pull the tip of the bag out of the donut.
Decorate the Donuts
- Powdered Sugar Donuts - in a small bowl add the ½ cup of powdered sugar. Place a donut in the icing sugar and gently shake the bowl to coat all sides of the donut.
- Glazed Donuts - in a small bowl stir together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and a few drops of red food coloring. Adjust the color to your liking. Stir until the icing is thick. If the glaze is too runny, add a teaspoon at a time of additional icing sugar. If the glaze is too thick, add a very small splash of milk.
- Serve and enjoy!
Tips for the Best Donuts
- Cooking Time - if you have an air fryer we recommend making these donuts in the air fryer. They cook so quickly it's the fastest, cleanest, and easiest way to make them. However, you can also deep fry the donuts if you prefer.
- Flavor Variations - the fun part about jelly donuts is that you can really use any kind of jam or fruit spread you like for the filling. You can use any variety of jam (ex. strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, triple berry, etc.), you can also use a can of lemon curd or lemon pie filling, you can also use Nutella or Biscoff spread!
- Decorating - get creative with the decorations! We love to do a combination of glazed donuts and powdered sugar coated donuts. When making the icing don't make it too runny or else the icing will drip right off the donuts. You want the icing to be nice and thick so it does not drip down the sides too much. Or you can also make a thinner glaze and completely coat the donuts top and bottom in the glaze.
FAQ
Once the donuts are glazed or coated in powdered sugar they are best served at room temperature. If reheated the glaze or powdered sugar coating will melt.
Store cooled glazed donuts covered in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Store cooled powdered sugar coated donuts covered at room temperature for 2-3 days.
Yes! These donuts are perfect for make ahead. For best results we would recommend only preparing and decorating the donuts up to 1 day in advance so you can enjoy them while they are still fresh. Just follow the recipe as usual and store the donuts up to 1 day in advance (glazed donuts stored in the fridge, powdered sugar coated donuts at room temperature).
Glazed donuts can be frozen but the glaze will slightly melt when thawed. We recommend freezing before glazing and then decorate them once thawed.
Powdered sugar coated jelly donuts can also be frozen but the icing sugar will melt slightly, you can simply dip them in powdered sugar again before serving.
