What to Serve with this Dish
- Broccoli Cheddar Soup
- Chicken Gnocchi Soup (Olive Garden Copycat)
- Zuppa Toscana (Olive Garden Copycat)
- Peach Caprese Salad
- Greek Orzo Salad
Ingredients
- Pizza Crust - for the quickest recipe we love to use a tube of Pillsbury pizza dough. It's so easy because you just need to pop open the package, unroll it and assemble. One tube is the perfect size for 12 pizza rolls that bake in a 12-cup muffin tin. You can also use a store bought or homemade pizza dough that you roll out into a large rectangle.
- Mozzarella Cheese - this is the classic cheese used for pizza but you can also use any cheese you like or hand on hand. For a spicy recipe you can even use a jalapeno Monterey jack or pimento cheese!
- Pizza Sauce - store bought or homemade works great. For a quick weeknight dinner or party appetizer we like to use a store bought jar of pizza sauce.
- Pepperoni - pepperoni is one of the most common and popular pizza toppings so we love to use that. You can also swap for salami, or a spicy salami!
- Pizza Toppings - this is where the fun beings! You can customize the pizza rolls to your liking by using your favorite pizza toppings. Some of our favorites include onions, mushroom, bell peppers... and of course pineapple!
How to Make Pizza Rolls
Full Printable Recipe at Bottom of page
- Preheat the oven to 350˚F with a rack in the middle of the oven. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray or brush with cooking oil of choice.
- If using a store bought pizza dough ball, roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle about ½” thick. If using a tube of Pillsbury pizza dough, simply unroll the tube and place the dough on a lightly floured piece of parchment paper or kitchen counter.
- Evenly spread the pizza sauce over the dough. Evenly distribute the shredded mozzarella cheese on the sauce. Evenly distribute any pizza toppings of your choice over cheese (ex. onions, mushrooms, peppers, etc.). Lastly, top with an even layer of pepperoni (this layering order will give you the cleanest cuts and make them easier to roll).
- Use a knife or pizza cutter to make 12 evenly spaced markings along the long edge of the dough to mark where you will slice each piece. Slice the dough into 12 even strips (cutting from the long side up). Tightly roll each piece to create the pizza roll and place into the muffin tin.
- In a small bowl stir together the garlic butter ingredients. Brush the garlic butter over the tops of each pizza roll
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Garnish the cooked pinwheels with shredded parmesan cheese and serve with extra pizza sauce to dip. Enjoy!
Tips for the Best Pizza Rolls
- Pizza Dough - this recipe can be made with home made or store bought pizza dough. If you are looking for the quickest and easiest way to make this recipe we recommend using a tube of Pillsbury pizza dough! It's already rolled out into a large rectangle and you can slice it into exactly 12 even pieces to make 12 pizza rolls in a muffin tin.
- Flavor Variations - the best part about this recipe is that it is fully customizable!
- Topping Variations - you can use any type of pepperoni you like, or even salami. For a spicy recipe use a spicy cacciatore or hot calabrese salami. You can use any combination of classic pizza toppings such as onions, bell peppers, hot banana peppers, mushrooms, and even pineapple!
- Sauce Variations - this is a great recipe for making a few flavor variations because one tube of pizza dough makes 12 pizza rolls. So if you double the recipe using 1 tubes of dough and 2 muffin tins you can make one batch with a tomato based pizza sauce and the other batch you can make with an alfredo sauce! Our favorite combo is alfredo sauce, mozzarella, shredded cooked chicken, and red onion!
