Fall off the bone ribs coated in a sweet and sticky barbeque sauce. Made in an Instant Pot these everyday ribs will make any day feel like a summer BBQ.
Cooking tender, fall off the bone bbq ribs at home is my idea of a perfect summer dinner. Living in Canada we don't have the pleasure of year round grilling.
Even on a nice summer day the idea of making ribs can be somewhat daunting as some cooking methods take hours to get tender ribs.
Thanks to an electric pressure cooker (Instant Pot) with only 1 hour of cooking you will have fall off the bone ribs.
How to Make Instant Pot Ribs
Unlike other cooking methods for ribs that can take hours and require constant monitoring, making ribs in the Instant Pot is a set it and forget it method in a fraction of the time. The Instant Pot locks in moisture and makes the ribs tender in a fraction of the time.
From start to finish these Instant Pot ribs take 60 minutes to cook:
- 25 minutes for Instant Pot to come to pressure
- 25 minutes cook time
- 10 minutes natural release followed by a quick release
- Optional but recommended: 5 - 10 minute broil in the oven or on a bbq/grill

Steps
1 Prepare a dry rub of paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin and smoked paprika.
2 Remove the membrane on each rack of ribs. Start at one end of the underside of the ribs and with a knife gently pierce through the clear membrane and pull it away from the rack. This step is optional but removing the membrane is recommended for best results.
3 Cut racks into 3-4 piece rib sections and sprinkle with dry rub. Massage dry rub onto both sides of ribs.
4 Pour 1 cup (or 1.5 cups if using a 10 quart Instant Pot) of water into the Instant Pot and 2 tablespoons of your favorite BBQ sauce.
5 Lay ribs against wall of Instant Pot on a trivet in a circular shape until all ribs are in the pot.
6 Crush 3-4 cloves of garlic and scatter on top of the ribs. Pressure cook on High for 25 minutes. Allow pressure to naturally release for 10 minutes and then quick release and remove ribs.
7 Generously pour your favorite bbq sauce over the ribs and broil on high (or bbq) for 5-10 minutes or until nicely charred.
When it is winter in Canada our ribs are broiled in the oven for 5-10 minutes (pictured in this post) but they can also be bbqed for 5-10 minutes to char the outside and add a more smokey flavor.
This is a great recipe if you are new to Instant Pot cooking. It is a truly set it and forget it cooking method that cuts down your cooking time.
